The systematic purification of the self (tazkiyah)—cleansing the ego (nafs) and the heart (qalb) to align human agency with divine purpose.
We are told that we are NPCs or slaves to our impulses and external programming. This leads to desire-driven behavior (pigsty thinking), where our decisions are automated by marketing, social pressure, and ego. We feel unfree because we are ruled by parts of ourselves we haven’t examined.
Freedom is not the ability to satisfy every impulse.
Purification (tazkiyah) recognises that the desires (nafs) are raw energy that must be refined. Without purification, the perceiving heart (qalb) becomes clouded, making it impossible to see truth or perceive intellectual alignment.
Tazkiyah is the engine of transformation. Through practices of discipline, reflection (tafakkur), and remembrance (dhikr), we de-program the individualist ego.
