The Ground-Level View: The Hanging Pendulum

My stint at TBWA in 2014 was a high-stakes baptism in what I now call Function Friction. Officially an Account Trainee, I spent my days as a “hanging pendulum” in Business Development, swinging between two versions of the industry that had stopped speaking the same language.

On one side was the General Manager & Client Director, a relentless business engine who saw every pitch as a logistical conquest. On the other was a Senior Creative Director from the old guard, a veteran legend who had “never made it out to Mumbai,” remaining a fixture in Pune who treated the trademarked “Disruption®” operating system as a corporate nuisance.

I was the bridge. My job was to translate the GM’s high-velocity commercial metrics into a language the Guru wouldn’t reject as “mechanical slop,” and then reverse-engineer the Guru’s visceral, hand-drawn insights into a deck the client could actually present to their board. This was my first masterclass in Business Development: learning that in any high-stakes environment, the most critical layer isn’t the data or the design, it’s the emotional intelligence that holds them both together.
