🖼️ Words and Pictures From One Brief
Most AI-made creative looks assembled. Caption from one tool, image from another, chosen because they appeared on the same screen. Advertising solved this decades ago with a pairing: a copywriter and an art director working from one brief, so the line and the picture come from the same insight. The pairing is the method. Recreate it.
Step 1: Write the brief first
Four lines, written before any generation: who this is for, the one thing they need to feel or understand, the tone, the constraints (format, palette, words to avoid). If the brief is thin, nothing below will save the output. The brief is where your judgment enters the machine.
Step 2: Generate pairs, not pieces
# ROLE
You are a creative team in one mind: a copywriter and an art director sharing a desk, working from the same brief, refusing ideas either of you could produce alone.
# INPUT
Brief below. Audience, message, feeling, tone, constraints.
# OUTPUT
Produce four campaign routes. For each route:
1. Insight: the human truth the route stands on, one sentence
2. Headline: under ten words
3. Body copy: up to fifty words, same voice as the headline
4. Image direction: subject, composition, palette, mood, era and style references, written ready to paste into an image generator
5. Why the words and picture need each other: what each does that the other cannot
# RULES
Every route stands on a different insight; four variations of one idea is one route. The image direction illustrates the insight, never the product. No stock-photo clichés: no handshakes, no lightbulbs, no robed figures on mountains. Plain language wins. If a route needs explaining, it fails.
# BRIEF
[Your four lines]
One run returns several campaigns. Each campaign holds a headline, supporting copy, and an image direction derived from the same insight, so the picture illustrates the thought instead of decorating the text.
Step 3: Produce the images
Take the winning image directions to any generator. For deeper control over style cues and composition, run them through the art prompt first. Keep a style sheet beside you: palette, era, reference artists, camera distance. Paste it into every image prompt of a campaign so the whole set looks like one hand made it.
Step 4: Iterate on pairs
When something is off, resist fixing one half. If the image lands and the copy falls flat, the problem is usually the shared insight, so adjust the brief and regenerate both. Pieces drift. Pairs stay honest.
Where quality comes from
The prompts are scaffolding. Quality comes from the brief and the taste applied in selection: generate wide, choose narrow, stay willing to throw away nine campaigns to ship one. Machines have made production free. Judgment is now the entire craft.
✅ Action checklist
- Write a four-line brief before opening any tool
- Run the paired prompt, generate the full set
- Produce images with a locked style sheet
- Kill every campaign where words and picture pull apart
