Cognitive software you didn’t choose, running processes you can’t see, producing decisions you think are entirely your own.
Calling a belief system an “operating system” isn’t a new idea dressed in tech language — it’s a specific, decades-old claim in philosophy of mind: that cognition itself works like computation, information processed by rule-governed structure rather than some irreducibly non-physical “thinking stuff.” Popular usage strips the technical commitments and keeps the intuition: something underneath your conscious thoughts is doing the actual processing, and you rarely inspect it directly.
The formal version of this claim — the “computer metaphor of mind,” tied to mid-20th-century cognitivism and the rise of artificial intelligence research — treated the brain as hardware and cognition as the software running on it, a framework that shaped cognitive science’s founding assumptions for decades. It has also been seriously contested since: critics argue the metaphor smuggles in assumptions (a strict hardware/software split, a central processor, discrete symbolic operations) that don’t actually hold for biological brains, and a growing body of work in embodied and situated cognition builds alternative metaphors instead.
