A coin created for a joke or a moment, not a purpose — and traded as if the joke has cash value, because for as long as the hype lasts, it does.
Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, which were built to solve specific technical problems, memecoins exist mainly for entertainment, community identity, and speculation. Dogecoin and Shiba Inu are the best-known examples. They run on real blockchain infrastructure (often Ethereum or Solana), so the technology is genuine — the value proposition is the part that’s manufactured, sustained purely by social media attention and collective belief.
That makes them exceptionally volatile. A memecoin’s price can multiply in hours on nothing but hype, and collapse just as fast when attention moves elsewhere — most buyers should expect to lose their entire position, not just underperform.
