Freedom in the modern sense means the absence of restraint. Islamic freedom means the absence of false masters. A person who submits only to God is not free from obligation, but free from every lesser claim on their loyalty, fear, and identity.
The Arabic root of Islam (islam) carries the meaning of voluntary surrender. The word abd, meaning slave or servant of God, is the highest title a human being can hold in the Islamic tradition, not a mark of degradation. To be God’s slave is to be released from the slavery of wealth, reputation, desire, and the approval of other people. The paradox is structural: only in the most vulnerable and submissive position before the Divine does a person channel limitlessness.
This is where fearlessness is produced. What we submit to is what we fear. When a person submits to status, they fear losing status. When they submit to wealth, they fear poverty. When they submit to God alone, the lesser fears lose their grip. Tawakkul (tawakkul), active reliance on God after exhausting one’s means, is the daily mechanism of this release. It is not passive resignation but the deliberate act of entrusting outcomes to the only one who controls them. The result is clarity, direction, and a bravery that does not depend on circumstance.
