The mind can be captured by the expectation of a reward before the reward arrives.

Modern consumer environments are designed to keep people moving toward the next signal, purchase, notification, or reveal. The resulting restlessness is often described as a search for pleasure, but the stronger mechanism is frequently anticipation. The promise of a future reward can hold attention even when the reward itself is brief or disappointing.

Dopamine is not simply a chemical released when something feels good. Research on dopamine neurons shows that their activity tracks reward-predicting signals and changes when an outcome is better or worse than expected. In practical terms, the cue can become motivating before the reward appears. Novelty, intermittent rewards, countdowns, personalised recommendations, and delayed delivery can all create a gap between desire and fulfilment in which anticipation grows.

This helps explain why an endless feed or shopping interface can feel compelling without consistently producing satisfaction. Each cue offers a possible payoff, and uncertainty can make the next attempt more attention-grabbing than a predictable result. The person is not only consuming rewards. They are repeatedly rehearsing the expectation of one.

The distinction matters because it changes the point of intervention. Reducing the number of rewards is not enough if the environment continues to manufacture anticipation. A person becomes less governable when they can notice the cue, separate expectation from need, and decide whether the next act is chosen or merely prompted.
