The shift from a living, artistic cosmos to a mechanical, measurable universe. This shift changed the way we view nature, or look at other polymaths who tried to fight this separation. The Renaissance was the grand finale of a unified human consciousness. It was the spectacular “after-taste” of a time when human beings didn’t have to choose between truth and beauty.
Renaissance period narrative, is considered as the dawn of fusion between Art and Science. It is not. This period was a twilight. The magnificent, final flare-up of an ancient way of thinking before modern fragmentation took over.
Leonardo da Vinci was less “first modern scientist” and more like the last grand master of an ancient, holistic worldview.
- The Medieval “Studio” and Islamic Polymaths
Long before the Renaissance, the separation between a “craftsman” (artist) and a “philosopher” (scientist) didn’t exist. The Renaissance was trying to recapture a unity that had existed for centuries:
- The Islamic Golden Age (8th–14th Century): Polymaths like Al-Hazem (Alhazen) didn’t separate optics from geometry or visual perception. Al-Jazari was an engineer who built incredible automated machines (robotics) that were designed specifically to be beautiful, artistic kinetic sculptures for royal courts.
- The Cathedral Builders: The medieval master masons who built Notre Dame or Chartres had to be structural engineers, master geometer-mathematicians, and sculptors all at once. They didn’t see a difference between the physics of a flying buttress and the spiritual beauty of a stained-glass window.
- Da Vinci as the End of an Era, Not the Start
If we look closely at Leonardo da Vinci, his methodology actually belongs to the pre-modern world.
Modern science, which began taking over right after Leonardo died, is built on reductionism (breaking things down into isolated parts, isolating variables, and using pure mathematics). Da Vinci did the exact opposite. His method was analogical and holistic:
- The Earth as a Body: Leonardo genuinely believed the Earth was a living organism. He studied the flow of rivers by comparing them to the flow of blood in human veins. To him, the macrocosm (the universe) and the microcosm (the human body) were bound by the same artistic, living geometry.
- The Rejection of his Methods: Soon after his death, the Scientific Revolution (Galileo, Newton) completely rejected Leonardo’s holistic, visual style of science. They demanded abstract equations, not beautiful drawings. Leonardo’s scientific notebooks were largely ignored and buried for centuries because the “new” science deemed his visual, interconnected approach outdated.
- The Renaissance as a “Revival” (Literally)
The very word Renaissance means “rebirth.” The thinkers of that era were obsessively looking backward, not forward. They were trying to resurrect the lost, unified knowledge of Ancient Greece, Egypt, and Rome (the Hermetic tradition), where geometry, music, astronomy, and art were all considered part of a single cosmic harmony called the Quadrivium.
By the mid-1600s, this ancient magical/artistic view of science was completely killed off by the mechanical worldview, which treated nature like a dead clockwork machine to be measured, not a living masterpiece to be observed.
In 1959, physicist-and-novelist C.P. Snow delivered the Rede Lecture that gave this divide its name: “The Two Cultures,” describing a “gulf of mutual incomprehension” between scientists and literary intellectuals who could no longer talk to each other, each side treating basic fluency in the other’s domain as unnecessary. Snow’s point wasn’t that the split was good or inevitable — it was a warning about the cost of two educated classes who’d stopped being able to communicate.
The split he diagnosed has since become the default assumption: that “the arts” and “the sciences” are naturally separate tracks requiring separate temperaments. Before the split hardened, they weren’t seen that way. The Renaissance polymath and the classical (‘ilm) tradition both treated inquiry as one continuous activity, not two. “Art and science informed each other” is a return to the older framing, not a new one.
