Anticipatory consumption keeps desire alive by making the future more rewarding than possession.
Much of modern consumption happens before the purchase, viewing, delivery, or achievement. The preview, countdown, recommendation, unboxing video, limited drop, and next episode all offer a small experience of the reward in advance. The person is consuming the possibility of satisfaction while remaining permanently available for the next promise.
Anticipatory consumption names the behaviour that forms around this promise. It is driven by the gap between wanting and having, where expectation generates enough excitement to sustain searching, scrolling, comparing, and buying. The reward does not need to arrive quickly. Uncertainty and intermittent reinforcement can make the search more compelling because each new signal might deliver what the last one did not.
The Economy of Almost
Neuroscience research on reward prediction shows that dopamine neurons respond to reward-predicting stimuli and to the difference between an expected reward and what actually arrives. In a commercial environment, this makes anticipation a valuable design surface. The system can sell the signal, the queue, the possibility, and the next promise even when the final object is ordinary.
The result is a person who is always approaching an experience and rarely inhabiting one. Consumption becomes a method of remaining in the future. Each product, video, or piece of advice promises arrival, while the act of anticipating it produces the engagement that keeps the system fed.
The decisive question is therefore not whether a person consumes. It is whether the thing being consumed is the good itself or the promise of becoming satisfied by it.
